Fray, Edwin

Dr. Edwin Fray (born 1910, died August 30, 2000) was married to Dora Frey-Schwyn, had three children, and lived in Ronco sopra Ascona in southern Switzerland, since the 1950s.

He was a dentist (Dr. med.) and also deeply involved in botany. He had a large garden on the southern slope of Lake Maggiore, in which he planted several botanical rarities. He also had many other less frost-hardy botanical rarities, which he overwintered in a greenhouse.

He had contacts with botanists and institutes worldwide and supported many institutes, botanists, and nurseries, as well as amateur botanists, with his knowledge and materials.

For example, he played a key role in the establishment and planting of the Botanical Garden on the island of Brissago. He inspired the Otto Eisenhut nursery in San Nazzaro in Switzerland to dedicate himself to Rutaceae and supported them with materials and knowledge, which enabled many hobby gardeners to obtain special citrus rarities that were unavailable anywhere else decades ago. In the late 1990s, he planted a lot of citrus fruits with increased frost resistance in Hamburg. His enthusiasm has infected many in Europe. However, in the winter of 2015, after severe frosts, most of the Voss collection died, after which he stopped experimenting with promoting citrus fruits to colder regions.

nursery and Dr. Edwin Frey early in his career, which also inspired him greatly.

In summary, it can be said that Dr. Edwin Frey, with his knowledge, contacts, and by sharing his botanical materials, inspired and supported many nurseries and institutes, thus contributing significantly to the growing interest in citrus plants among hobby gardeners. All this happened decades ago, in a time before the internet, and when people in temperate Central Europe had barely considered hardy citrus plants.

Bred citrus hybrids

In the middle of the 20th century Dr. Edwin Fray brought seedlings of Sanford citrange and some other citrus fruits from the USA, selected from them some of the most interesting hybrids of the second generation, such as Cunningham Livurce citrange, Sanford Curafora citrange, Sanford Venasca citrange.
